Our Place in Atlanta's History

Chastain Horse Park's history and importance in the community dates back generations. The original stables were built as part of the Chastain Park plan in 1939, offering riding lessons and horse boarding for local residents, and a popular destination for horse show competitions.

After years of disrepair, in 1992 a proposal was presented to rebuild the facility and create an equestrian center that would operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization specializing in equine therapy. 

In spring of 1998, then Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell signed off on an indefinite lease of the horse park and facilities to  the new nonprofit organization.

Today, Chastain Horse Park ranks among the region’s premier equestrian facilities and serves hundreds of children and adults of all cognitive and physical abilities from more than 30 counties across the greater Atlanta region. A PATH premier accredited center, the Horse Park houses three barns and four arenas dedicated to use for therapy (occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, and mental health therapy), therapeutic riding, equine-assisted learning for community outreach groups, a riding school, and boarding program.

In 2020, Chastain Horse Park's Board of Director's launched the "Healing Through Horses" capital campaign. The campaign was designed with an eye to the future and the ambitious goal of doubling the impact of the therapeutic program.  As a result of the campaign,  in 2025, the Horse Park debuted a new Therapeutic Horsemanship Center, complete with a clinical occupational and physical therapy space, a renovated Community Barn, expanded outdoor space for the horses, a new Therapeutic Arena, and other ancillary structures. Chastain Horse Park is prepared to meet the needs of the community now and into its next chapter.
